Downloading and Installing the Pocket-NAV Software from the Cambridge Website
July 31, 2000
The Pocket-NAV Software is available for downloading from our website at
http://www.cambridge-aero.com/pocketNAV.htm#download
To help you successfully
accomplish this task we have provided step by step instructions below.
Before you can download the software you must determine which version of
Microsoft's Windows CE operating system your handheld PC contains. Beginning
with the Start button on the left side of the task bar, make the following
selections:
Start, Settings, System, and General or About.
There you will find the version of Windows CE.
If your device uses:
Windows CE Version 2.x use
PocketNAV-CE2
Windows CE Version 3.x use PoketNAV-CE3
IMPORTANT: All
earlier versions of the software were titled "PalmNav", no
matter what version they were. As releases were installed on the Palm-PC
the old version was over written by the new version. This release now
comes in two "flavors" of the same program and is not
titled "PalmNav". Remember, when you load the new version of the
Pocket-NAV software, your Palm/Pocket PC will still contain the previous
version. To avoid
confusion delete the previous version before installing the new version. If it is not deleted
and the button is not reassigned to the new version, you may inadvertently
start the wrong version.
Step 1:
Before you can download the file you must have a folder on your computer to
save it in. The PocketNAV-CEx file will be downloaded and retained in this folder in
case you ever need to reload it (i.e., if the battery goes dead in your
Palm-PC).
The Desktop is the screen that you see when you turn on your computer.
- At the lower left corner of the Desktop is a button titled
"Start". Click this button once with the left mouse button
and choose "Programs", then when the next menu pops out select
"Windows Explorer" and click it once with the left mouse button.. You now have a view of all of your computer's
hard drives, folders and files. For further information on Windows Explorer
please refer to the documentation received with your operating system.
- Place the mouse pointer on the icon (little picture) of a hand holding a
box with the letter {C:} after the icon (there may also be some text between
the icon and the {C:} such as "Win98_se"), near the top left area
of the Windows Explorer screen. Click once with the left mouse button
to highlight the letter {C:}.
- At the very top of the screen is the word "File", click once on
it with the left mouse button and select "New". When the next menu
pops out select "Folder".
- Start typing, and the words "New Folder" will be replaced with
what you type. Type the following: "CAItemp". When finished
typing press the "Enter" key on the keyboard.
- You now have an empty folder on your computer’s hard drive called
CAItemp.
- Place the mouse pointer on the box with an X in it at the upper right
corner of the computer screen and press your left mouse button once
to close Window Explorer.
Step 2:
- Using the browser of your choice (i.e., Netscape or Internet Explorer) go
to the Cambridge website http://www.cambridge-aero.com/pocketNAV.htm#download
Or, if you are already on the Pocket-NAV page, click the link at the top of
the Pocket-NAV page titled "Download". This will take you to the
section of the Pocket-NAV page where the download information is located.
- There will be a link (text in blue) that says "Download PocketNAV-CEx
software here". Using your left mouse button, click the link to
the desired version one
time. What you do next depends on which browser you view the Internet with.
If you use Netscape:
- A box will appear that says "Save In" and there will be a white
rectangle with some wording in it. At the right edge of the rectangle will be
an arrow button pointing down. Click the button with the left mouse
button once and you will be presented with list of different areas within your
computer. One of them will be the same icon of the hand with the letter {C:} that you selected in Windows Explorer.
- Click once on that icon with the left mouse button and you will be
presented with another window which will show you all of the folders on your
{C:} drive (hard drive). Find the folder you named "CAItemp".
- Place the mouse pointer on the "CAItemp" folder icon and click
once with the left mouse button to select the folder.
- Now press the "Enter" key on your keyboard and the "Save
In" box should re-appear with the folder titled "CAItemp"
displayed in the white rectangle.
- Press the "Enter" key on your keyboard and Netscape will now
download and save the PocketNAV-CEx
file in the folder titled
"CAItemp".
If you use Internet Explorer:
- A text box will appear titled "File Download". There will be two
options: "run this program from current location" and "save
this program to disk". Place the mouse pointer on the small circle to the
left of the "save this program to disk" option and click with the
left mouse button once. Then press the "Enter" key on your keyboard.
A box will appear that says "Save As" and there will be a white
rectangle with some wording in it. At the right edge of the rectangle will be
an arrow button pointing down. Click the arrow button once with the left
mouse button and you will be presented with list of different areas within
your computer. One of them will be the same icon of the hand with the letter
C:\ that you selected in Windows Explorer.
- Click once on that icon with the left mouse button and you will be
presented with another window which will show you all of the folders on your
C:\ drive (hard drive). Find the folder you named "CAItemp".
- Place the mouse pointer on the folder icon and click once with the left
mouse button to select the folder.
- Now press the "Enter" key on your keyboard and the "Save
As" box should re-appear with the folder titled "CAItemp"
displayed in the white rectangle.
- Place the mouse pointer on the "Save" button and click once with
the left mouse button. Windows Explorer will now download and save the
PalmNAV-CEx
file in the folder titled "CAItemp". When the download is
complete, click the "Close" button with the left mouse button once.
Loading the Pocket-NAV software into your Palm-PC:
To load the Pocket-NAV software on your Palm-PC computer you must have
Microsoft ActiveSync loaded on your PC and have communication enabled between
the two computers. If you have trouble installing ActiveSync on your computer
you may call us, but first we suggest the following.
Contained on the ActiveSync CD, which you should have received with your
Palm-PC, is a file titled README.doc. This file is in the Windows Word format
and is titled "MICROSOFT ACTIVESYNC VERSION 3.0
READ ME FILE". This file provides information on installing and
troubleshooting ActiveSync. Next you should contact either Microsoft or the
manufacturer of your computer. If they cannot provide the answers you need, give
us a call and we will try to assist you.
To transfer:
- Once you have the Palm-PC cradle connected to the serial port on your PC and
have Active Sync installed, place the Palm-PC in the cradle and connect the
two computers.
- Put the mouse pointer on the "Start" button in the lower left
corner of the screen and click once using the left mouse button. Choose
"Programs", then "Windows Explorer". You now have a view
of all of your computer's drives and the files contained on each drive. For
further information on Windows Explorer please refer to the documentation
received with your operating system.
- In the right side of the Windows Explorer screen find the folder you created
titled "CAItemp". Click on it two times with the left mouse button
and it will open showing you the PocketNAV-CEx
file you downloaded from our website
earlier.
- Place the mouse pointer on the icon for the PocketNAV-CEx file and click once with
the RIGHT mouse button. A pop out menu will appear. Select the
"Copy" option by placing the mouse pointer on the word
"Copy" and click once with the left mouse button.
- If you have successfully loaded ActiveSync and have established a
communication link, you should see a folder in the lower left side of the
Windows Explorer screen called "Mobile Device". You may need to use
the vertical scroll bar that divides the two windows to view the entire
contents of the left side of the Windows Explorer screen. Find the
"Mobile Device" icon and click on it two times with the left
mouse button, the folder should open and display the contents of the mobile
device (Palm-PC).
- Click two times with the left mouse button on the "Windows"
folder icon and you will then see the folders and files contained in the
"Windows" folder.
- Place the mouse pointer on the "Start Menu" folder icon on the
right side of the screen and click once with the left mouse button to
highlight the folder. Now right click on the highlighted folder and
click "Paste" using the left mouse button.
- Select the "OK" option in the "File Conversion" window.
-
Once the new PocketNAV-CEx file has been transferred, double click on the "Start
Menu" folder icon with the left mouse button and you should find the
PocketNAV-CEx file within. At this time you should delete the earlier version
of the software titled "PalmNav...". Place the mouse pointer on the
file name "PalmNav..." and click once with the left mouse button to
highlight the file. Now click once with the right mouse button and
select "delete" from the drop down menu.
- Remove the Palm PC from the cradle and open the "Start" menu from
the task bar at the bottom of the Palm-PC window (see the user’s manual that
came with your Palm-PC). You should now see the PocketNAV-CEx listed as one of the
choices. To start the PocketNAV-CEx program press the stylus on the icon.
- If you want to load airspace or waypoint files into the Palm PC from your
computer, follow this same copy and paste procedure described above with the
exception of the following. The airspace and waypoint files (similar to Omarama.dat)
are to be copied into the folder titled "My
Documents" in the "Mobile Devices" folder.
Please Note: If you experience trouble with this procedure, please feel
free to give us a call. When you call, have these instruction available and we
will step through them together.
